LX2: Using Material Test Array to Find Optimal Settings

When cutting or engraving new materials with the LX2, finding the optimal combination of power and speed is essential. The Material Test Array feature in the LDS software’s Tool Center allows you to quickly and systematically test different parameter combinations, helping you quickly identify suitable settings for your material.

1. When Should You Use Material Test Array?

It is recommended to use the Material Test Array in the following situations:

  • Using new materials

    When the material is not included in the built-in material parameter library in the top-right corner of the software.

  • Unsatisfactory results

    When the current cutting or engraving results do not meet your expectations.

  • Fine-tuning parameters

    When you want to achieve specific effects, such as achieving darker engraving or improving cutting efficiency.

Tips
If you are testing a completely new material, it is recommended to start with engraving tests before performing cutting tests, as this helps reduce the risk of excessive burning or material waste.

2. Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Add a Test Shape

First, insert a shape or image on the canvas that will be used for testing—for example, a rectangle.

Step 2: Open Material Test Array

Select the shape, then click Tool Center on the left side of the software and choose Material Test Array.

Step 3: Configure Test Parameters

In general
· Higher power produces deeper or darker results.
· Lower speed increases laser exposure time, which also produces stronger effects.
· Excessive power or overly slow speed may cause burning, melting, or material damage.

A settings panel will pop up as shown below.

Rows & Columns

  • These determine the number of test samples generated in the array.
  • For example, a 5×5 array will generate 25 test squares.

Power Range (%)

  • Set a minimum and maximum value.
  • The system will automatically distribute values evenly within this range.

    Recommendation
    If unsure, use a wider range such as 10% to 100%.

Speed Range (mm/s)

  • Set minimum and maximum values.

    Recommendation
    A wide range is also suggested, such as 10 mm/s to 800 mm/s.

Safety Note 
During material testing, always monitor the machine and ensure proper ventilation, especially when using high power settings.

Step 4: Generate and Process the Array

After clicking Confirm, the system will generate a test array on the canvas. The test array will be automatically arranged based on your settings.

Click Process to start engraving. You will then get a material test board with multiple parameter combinations.

3. How to Interpret the Results

After processing, you will get a material sample containing multiple test results.

Identify the best result

Carefully observe each test square. Some may be too light, while others may appear overly burned. Select the result that provides the best balance between quality and material condition.

  • For engraving, look for clear details and consistent contrast without excessive burning.
  • For cutting, check whether the material is fully cut through while minimizing burn marks on the edges.

Read the corresponding parameters

Each test square is clearly labeled with its power and speed values in the software. Once you find the best result, record its parameters for future engraving or cutting tasks.

Optional Fine-Tuning

If multiple test results appear suitable, you can run a second test array using a narrower parameter range for more precise optimization.
