LP4 - Level & Balance the Machine

  • Updated

The following tutorial is a guide to leveling the LP4 to ensure optimal laser functionality and engraving.

Each LP4 unit is leveled individually at the factory prior to packaging and shipping. Some parts can become loose while in transit which may result in a slight tilt of the laser head and/or a gap between the bracket and the Electric Stand. The LP4 was designed with an easy-to-adjust Leveling Jig on the underside of the laser head to be used if this should occur.

Make these adjustments if your bracket is not flush with the Electric Stand or as part of your regular upkeep to maintain a properly leveled laser.

To eliminate all other variables, we recommend starting this process from Step 1 as if setting up the LP4 for the first time out of the box.

① Always be mindful when handling or transporting the LP4 Laser Unit. Disconnect the power when making adjustments and take care not to touch or damage the lens.

② A gradienter (carpenter's level) is required for the following procedure. It is not included in the LP4 toolbox.

Step 1: LP4 Assembly

1.1 Electric Stand Assembly

Place the base plate and tower (Electric Stand) on a clean flat surface. Remove the 4 M4 X 10 screws and the M2.5 hexagonal wrench from the LP4 toolbox that are used to assemble the Electric Stand.

Use a gradienter to ensure that your working surface is flat and level.

Match the Electric Stand's tower to the 4 screw holes in the top of the base plate and turn both parts over. Insert the 4 M4 X 10 screws from the underside of the base plate and tighten them firmly with the hexagonal wrench.

match the electric stands tower to the 4 screw holes

Check that the bracket is perpendicular to the base plate and firmly tighten the bolt until the bracket is flush with the Electric Stand's tower forming a 90° degree angle.

1.2 Attach the LP4 to the Electric Stand

Align the Laser Unit with the connecting bolt embedded in the Electric Stand's bracket and secure it by firmly tightening the knob.

Make sure both bolts are firmly tightened and the Laser Unit is secured to the bracket flat and flush. Use the gradienter to check that all of the vertical and horizontal surfaces of the assembled LP4 and Electric Stand are level and true (see Step 3 below).

1.3 LP4 Riser Accessory

The Riser accessory extends the height of the LP4 by 50 mm. This allows for engraving objects of different sizes, thicknesses, and shapes when using the LP4 Slide Extension and Rotary Extension.

Assemble the Electric Stand as instructed in Step 1.1 above and place it, along with the LP4 unit and the Riser accessory, on a clean flat surface.

Make sure that all 3 bolts are firmly tightened, both the Laser Unit and the Riser accessory are securely connected, and that they are flat and flush with each other. Use a gradienter to check that all of the vertical and horizontal surfaces of the assembled LP4 and Electric Stand are level and true (see Step 3 below).

Step 2: Level the LP4

Follow these instructions to adjust and fine-tune the LP4 with the Leveling Jig.

2.1 Level Left to Right

  1. Remove the M2 hexagonal wrench from the LP4 toolbox.
  2. While facing the LP4, place a gradienter horizontally on the unit's touch screen and check the location of the air bubble.
  3. If the bubble is not centered, use the hexagonal wrench to adjust the screw on the left side of the Leveling Jig, as seen in the image below.
  4. If the bubble is on or favoring the right side of the gradienter, turn the screw counterclockwise bit by bit until the air bubble is centered.
  5. If the bubble is on or favoring the left side of the gradienter, turn the screw clockwise bit by bit, until the air bubble is centered.

The LP4 is level when the air bubble is directly in the center of the gradienter. These steps are the same with or without the Riser accessory.

2.2 Level Forward to Back

  1. While facing the LP4, place a gradienter vertically on the unit's touch screen in line with the handle and check the location of the air bubble.
  2. If the bubble is not centered, use the hexagonal wrench to adjust the screw on the right side of the Leveling Jig as seen in the image below.
  3. If the bubble is away from you, turn the screw counterclockwise bit by bit, until the air bubble is centered.
  4. If the bubble is towards you, turn the screw clockwise bit by bit, until the air bubble is centered.

Step 3: Verify LP4 Level Balance

To check if the LP4 is balanced horizontally and vertically, simultaneously place individual gradienters on the following parts;

  • The touch screen
  • The end of the handle
  • The far end of the LP4 unit
  • The far end of the LP4 unit

If the gradienter bubbles are centered, each area is level and the LP4 is balanced and ready for use.

If one or more bubbles is not centered, the LP4 is not properly balanced. Ensure that all components are properly assembled by starting over from Part 1 and carefully repeat Part 2 to fine-tune and balance the LP4.

Note: Follow these steps if the Leveling Jig screws reach their limit while making the adjustments.

  1. Double check that the surface that you are working on is flat and level.
  2. Replace the lens cover and remove the Laser Unit from the Electric Stand bracket.
  3. Use the hexagonal wrench and turn the Leveling Jig screws clockwise until the jig is flush with the body of the Laser Unit.
  4. Re-attach the Laser Unit to the Electric Stand bracket and resume from step 2 as described above.

Please also Note:

  1. The purpose of the Leveling Jig is to adjust the internal laser components the laser should be balanced and in perfect working order after following the above instructions, even if a tilt or gap is still noticeable between the bracket and the Electric Stand.
  2. To allow for the free up and down movement of the Laser Unit, the bracket cannot be totally tightened and flush against the Electric Stand, so a small tilt or gap may remain visible. Adjusting the Leveling Jig will compensate for this and the LP4 should be accurate.
  3. If you are unable to satisfactorily level your LP4 after following all of the above steps, please contact the LaserPecker Technical Support team via support@laserpecker.com to request technical support or warranty service.
